Firefighter James Taylor was struck during a lightning strike in the early hours of Friday morning, but did not sustain a serious injury.

A Melbourne police spokesman said the officer was released from hospital on Saturday and it was not known if he would need any further medical treatment.

A police spokeswoman said the officer suffered serious damage to the frontal lobe after the accident.

“As the police are trained to handle lightning strikes, an internal report is still ongoing and we would urge any witnesses to call the police on 131 444, or provide us with a description of the person who struck the officer,” she said.

Police have issued a $100,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
